Years of rigorous study and dedication finally paid off for Lucas Maxey when he achieved his goal of a 36 on the ACT, a score that has only been obtained by one other student in South Laurel history. The ACT is a challenging  exam that tests a student’s preparedness for college and determines the amount of scholarship money that will be granted to them. When asked why he continued to take the ACT, Lucas responded “The only reason I took the ACT again was for the writing portion. After the English and math sections, I only felt like I had missed one question. So i just decided to really try on the reading and science to see if I could get the 36.” Obtaining a perfect score has opened up endless possibilities for Lucas and will ensure his success throughout his college career.

Lucas’ schedule has always been filled with challenging college level classes, participating in sports including soccer and tennis, and the new addition of choir and drama performance during his senior year. Despite all of this involvement Mr. 36, as his friends affectionately call him, has still managed to achieve his outstanding personal ACT goal. As a close friend of Lucas, I not only had the honor of seeing his score with him for the first time but also being right next to him while he took the test. When I asked about his reaction to the score Lucas said “When I first pulled up the results, it was at a table in the Cardinal Cafe with all my friends. I zoomed in on the score and my friends were going wild, but I was still taking it all in I guess.” I remember asking him how he scored so high and all he told me was “You gotta get in your ACT stance. Legs back, upper body forward, and focus everything you got on the test.” I of course thought that he was just being goofy as usual, but when I got my scores back I had achieved my personal goal and I will always attribute that to Lucas’s crazy test strategy. Lucas Maxey is an outstanding student, athlete, actor, singer, cook, and comedian. He is passionate about everything he does and cares deeply about everyone close to him. He is an amazing guy that his friends, family, and school could not be more proud of.
