There are so many outstanding artists at South Laurel High School. You can’t walk through the halls of SLHS and not notice the vast array of artistic talent that permeates our school. Below, we interview just a few of our talented artists!

Samantha Manning Breakfast

Samantha Manning, Grade 12, Breakfast Acrylic

Q: “What inspired this piece?”

A: “I found this photo on the internet and thought the colors and subject matter would be interesting to paint.”

Q: “What was the creative process like?”

A: “At first, I began drawing the shapes in pencil. I then applied a base layer of paint and started adding shading and highlights.”

Q: “What were some of the struggles that you faced?”

A: “I’ve never painted an egg before, it was an interesting, new experience.”

Samantha’s piece was still a work in progress at the time of the interview, but you may soon see it in the display case located in the halls outside the art room.

Ashley Blankenship Cleopatra

Ashley Blankenship, Grade 12, Cleopatra Acrylic

Q: “What inspired this piece?”

A: “The song ‘Cleopatra’ by The Lumineers inspired this piece. The song was about a taxi driver whose pen name was Cleopatra. She lived a life of young love and late complication, causing her to live alone after her divorce to reminisce on the story of her life.”

Q: “What was the creative process like?”

A: “I first sketched the image with a ‘True Blue’ Prismacolor pencil. I then applied acrylic paint to the work in this order: background, torso, and then the face and hair.”

Q: “What were some of the struggles that you faced?”

A: “Matching the features and making them even is always the hardest part for me.”

Elizabeth House Reflection

Elizabeth House, Grade 12, Reflection Pastel

Q: “What inspired this piece?”

A: “I was inspired by the unique angles that allowed me to capture the sunset and myself.”

Q: “What was the creative process like?”

A: “It was very tedious. There’s a lot of detail in that sucker!”

Q: “What were some of the struggles that you faced?”

A: “The struggles were trying to match the right tones so they weren’t too intense and they weren’t too muted”

This piece is actually going towards her portfolio, so yay for her!

A: “I started out with the contour of the eye and the background. Then I continued by adding shadows and highlights to give it the illusion of depth.”

Q: “What were some of the struggles that you faced?”

A: “Achieving the highlights and shadows for a perfect balance.”

This work is certainly pleasing to the eye. Ha! Get it?
