On Thursday, August 31, the South Laurel Cardinals strapped it up against the Colts of West Jessamine. With the Cards coming off of a 42-6 win the previous week, they were looking to be improve their record with another win. By the end of the night, the nail-biting game was the hot topic in Laurel County. The night ended with the Cardinals taking a 35-34 loss.

The game kicked off around 7:30 with the Cards getting the first ball. After lockdown defense from both teams, the first quarter was left scoreless. Shortly after, the Colts kicked a field goal to advance the lead to 3-0. The Cardinal offense then turned on with a pass from Bailey Fultz to Matthew Dalton, putting South back on top 7-3. Greer Stone from West Jessamine then rushed for a 54-yard touchdown to regain the lead and go into half time 9-7.

Starting into the third quarter, the Colts would start by scoring a touchdown and a good field goal to pull the lead 16-7. South would soon answer with a touchdown and a field goal to make the score 16-14. For the rest of the night it was a back and forth scoring game until about three minutes left in the fourth quarter where the Cards would score a touchdown making the game 35-34. Now two things could happen: kick a field goal for overtime, or go for the two-point conversion for the win. South would line up for two. 55 seconds left in the game, Fultz to Dalton in the back corner, no good but a flag on the play. The Cards would be granted another shot with same two options available. They would go for two again but this time Fultz would hand off to Jay Sams but would get stopped right at the goal line. South would then fall 35-34 to West Jessamine. Even though South lost in a last minute defeat, they walked off the field geared up to bring home the win next time.
